Breast augmentation

The goal of breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is to increase small breasts or for those who have suffered a decrease in size after a pregnancy or excessive weight loss. A breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is also performed to correct asymmetrical breasts by lifting them. Through a minimal incision around the areola or in the armpit, the breasts can be lifted and enhanced. The silicone breast prosthesis can be placed both above and below the pectoral muscle. According to the indication and patient's expectation, the optimal size of the breast prosthesis can be chosen so that the final result will appear as natural as possible. Usually the breast prostheses need to be replaced. Breast implants can also be used to reconstruct breasts that have had mastectomies (removal) of tumors as a result.

Recommendation:

The implantation of silicone prosthesis is done preferably from 18 years of age and older, when the patient has already reached bodily and psychological maturity. A breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is recommended to raise or lift the breasts in order to correct sagging or, in the case of men, set the muscles of the chest. A breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is also recommended as a repair surgery for women who had mastectomy.

According to plastic surgeon David Passy, who serves the cities of Itaperuna, Muriaé and Ipanema, in Rio de Janeiro, the choice of silicone prosthesis depends on surgeon’s experience, the type of prosthesis and also the types of breasts. Dr. David Passy recommends the use of silicone breast implants that present a more natural appearance. Round or conical breast prostheses can be used.

Duration:

The breast augmentation lasts approximately 1 to 1.5 hours with a period of hospitalization from 12 to 24 hours.

Anesthesia:

The anesthesia recommended for a breast augmentation is epidural or local with sedation.

Scar:

The silicone breast implant is placed through a small incision in the areola, the groove under the breast or in the armpit. The scar from breast augmentation is very small, measuring about three to four inches.

Recovery:

One should avoid physical exercise or heavy lifting for 72 hours after the breast augmentation or breast implant surgery. In 15 days, the patient is allowed to return to their normal activities. The breasts take three to six months to heal and present their final form.

Postoperative:

The patient must use a surgical bra for up to a month, even to sleep, in order to protect and support the breasts. This garment assists the healing of tissues and accelerates the reabsorption of swelling. The patient should avoid raising their arms above their head for two weeks, nor should they sleep on their breasts for at least 45 days after the breast augmentation or breast implant surgery.
